Your tune won't flash. Here's why.
You paid for the licence, the app connected, and the write failed. This is almost always one specific thing.
It is a bad afternoon. You bought the tuning licence, plugged in the cable, the app found the car, and then the flash failed. Nothing changed, and you are out the price of the licence.
On a 2019-or-later BMW this is almost always the same thing: the DME is locked from the factory and no platform can write to it until that restriction is removed.
Why the app let you buy it
Tuning platforms sell licences per vehicle and generally will not stop you buying one for a locked car. The app connects fine, reads fine, and fails at the write. That is not a bug in the app and it is not a fault with your car — it is the security on the control unit doing exactly what BMW designed it to do.
A locked DME reads normally and fails on write. If diagnostics work but flashing does not, that pattern alone tells you most of what you need to know.
Other things it might be
- Low battery voltage. Flashing draws for a long time and a marginal battery will drop out mid-write. Anyone doing this properly runs a regulated supply.
- An interrupted previous attempt. If a write has already failed partway on this car, say so before anyone tries again — it changes the job.
- A cable or adapter that isn't up to it. Cheap OBD adapters cause more failed flashes than anything else on this list.
- The wrong file for the car. Uncommon with the major platforms, but it happens with hand-me-down maps.
What to do next
Stop retrying. Repeated failed writes on a car that is not going to accept them achieves nothing and adds risk. Work out whether the DME is locked first — that is a VIN check, and it takes a couple of minutes.
If it is locked, an unlock is a one-time procedure that removes the restriction so the car will accept flashes over OBD from then on. Your existing tuning licence keeps working; you are not buying it again.
If it is not locked, the problem is one of the others on that list, and we will tell you that rather than selling you an unlock you don't need.
If the car is now dead
A write that failed badly enough to leave the car unable to start or communicate is a different job to a straightforward unlock. Tell whoever you speak to up front — finding out in the driveway is the expensive way to discover it.
